Discoloured Shingles

Dark streaks or patches on your shingles are typically caused by algae or moss growth. While algae is mostly a cosmetic issue, moss can trap moisture against the shingle surface and accelerate deterioration.

Widespread discolouration can also indicate granule loss — the protective mineral coating on asphalt shingles. Check your gutters for an accumulation of granules, which looks like coarse sand. Heavy granule loss means your shingles are nearing the end of their lifespan.
